The jerseys sold for $7.8 million at Sotheby's, one of the world's largest brokers of paintings, jewelry and collectibles, in New York. Messi has worn the six jerseys up for auction in the first half, semi-final, quarter-final, last sixteen and two group stage matches of the last World Cup final.

Diego Maradona's 'Hand of God' jersey has sold for the highest price in football matches. After Maradona's death, this jersey was sold for $9.2 million last year. Messi's six jerseys ultimately did not surpass the price of Maradona's jersey.

And all in all, the most expensive jersey sold at auction as sports memorabilia belongs to basketball legend Michael Jordan. The jersey worn by Jordan in the NBA Finals for the Chicago Bulls in 1998 was sold at auction for $1.1 million after last year.

Sotheby's said about the Messi jersey auction, a part of the money from the auction will be donated to the Unicas project. With the support of the Leo Messi Foundation which manages the Sant Joan de Dios Barcelona Children's Hospital. This project mainly works with children with rare diseases.

Before this, the news of Messi's 6 jerseys being auctioned came to the fore last month. At the time, Sotheby's also said it expected $1 million from the auction. After that, the auction is going on from November 30 till yesterday.
